EACJ gets New Judges and Deputy Principal Judge.
The East African Court of Justice, on the\r\n15th Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State that took place on 30th November\r\n2013 at Speke Resort and Conference Centre, in Kampala, Uganda, appointed Dr.\r\nEmmanuel Ugirashebuja from the Republic of Rwanda Judge of the East African\r\nCourt of Justice (Appellate Division) to replace Hon. Lady Justice Emily Rusera\r\nKayitesi who resigned.

The Summit also appointed Hon. Lady Justice Monica Mugenyi from\r\nthe Republic of Uganda Judge of the East African Court of Justice (First\r\nInstance Division) to replace Hon. Lady Justice Mary Stella Arach Amoko, who\r\nalso served as Deputy Principal Judge who retired.

The Summit designated Hon. Justice Isaac Lenaola from the\r\nRepublic of Kenya as Deputy Principal Judge to replace Hon. Lady Justice Mary\r\nStella Arach Amoko. Both the designation and appointment took effect from 1st\r\nDecember 2013.

Her Lordship Hon. Lady Justice, Stella Arach was appointed Judge\r\nof EACJ in June 2006 and as a Deputy Principal Judge of the First Instance\r\nDivision in November 2008, she therefore served for seven years (7) at the East\r\nAfrican Court of Justice. Hon. Lady Justice Arach currently serves as a Judge\r\nof the Supreme Court Uganda.

Her Lordship Hon. Lady Justice, Emily Kayitesi from the Republic\r\nof Rwanda was appointed Judge of Appeal on EACJ Appellate Division in June 2008\r\nup to November 2013 when she has resigned. She therefore served for five (5)\r\nyears only. Hon. Lady Justice Kayitesi is currently a Judge of the Supreme\r\nCourt of Rwanda.

His Lordship Hon. Justice Isaac Lenaola was appointed Judge of\r\nEACJ, First Instance Division in May 2011 up-to-date when he is appointed a\r\nDeputy Principal Judge of the same Division.

The Judge President of the Court Hon. Justice Harold Nsekela\r\ncongratulates them upon their new appointment and welcomes them to the EACJ\r\nfamily and hopes for good cooperation in implementing the role of the Court; to\r\nensure adherence to law in interpretation and application and compliance with\r\nthe Treaty for the establishment of East African Community.

His Lordship Hon. Justice Nsekela also congratulated Hon.\r\nJustice Lenaola upon his new designation of his new office of the Deputy\r\nPrincipal Judge of the First Instance Division and that the Court expects a lot\r\nfrom his service delivery. He also appreciated Hon. Lady Justices, Kayitesi and\r\nArach for the great services rendered to EACJ and wished them well in their\r\nendeavors. He further congratulated Justice Stella Arach upon her recent\r\nelevation from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court Judge of the Republic\r\nof Uganda.

The newly appointed Judges and the Deputy Principal Judge will\r\nreport on duty when they have business in Court, as they are on ad-hoc nature\r\nof work from their National Courts.

The Summit also approved the Council recommendation to extend\r\nthe jurisdiction of the East African Court of Justice to cover trade and\r\ninvestment as well as matters associated with the East African Monetary Union.\r\nOn Human Rights matters as well as crimes against humanity, the Summit directed\r\nthe Council of Ministers to work with the African Union on this matter.
